From Traditional Chinese Medicine and its ancient Five Rhythm Model, we have learned there are basic forces or energies that control the cycles of growth and change in our environment, as in during the changing of the seasons. These same energies regulate our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being, with each season carrying a unique energy that creates a different affect on our mind, body and soul. Once you learn how to balance and realign these seasonal energies, you can create a life full of health and harmony all year long.
The energy of the Wood Rhythm is felt most powerfully in the Spring, and since Spring is just around the corner (yes, it really is!), I thought it would be a good idea to show you how to balance this energy using the Wood Rhythm Exercise. Check out the video below to see how you can increase your chances of bursting into your Spring trouble-free!
So, just to add a little juice to this discussion, Wood energy has a forceful, aggressive feel to it, hence the need to rid yourself of anger, irritation, and frustration when Wood energy has become imbalanced. As mentioned before, Wood energy is most obvious in the season of Spring. This is apparent when you think of or witness buds of plants and flowers bursting through the Earth into vigorous life against all odds. It takes a lot of energy for a seed to sprout and bust through the surface of the ground. That’s how powerful the energy of the Wood Rhythm is and since this energy resides within you too, it’s clear why it’s in your best interest to keep it balanced, especially during the Springtime.
Other than aggressive behavior (i.e. anger, irritation, frustration), signs your Wood energy may be imbalanced include impatience, arrogance, greed, anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, fatigue, and lethargy. Physical signs can include high blood pressure, muscle cramps, heartburn, migraine headaches, insomnia, allergies, visual disturbances, low blood pressure, and digestive problems.
On a more positive note, balanced Wood energy, especially during the Spring will leave you filled with inspiration and energy to act upon your ideas that were brewing during the Winter months. You will feel a new spark and power within you. Just like the plants, flowers, and trees that come into full bloom during the Spring, new growth in all aspects of our lives is stimulated. Balanced Wood energy during the Spring season leads to a time of great creation and development.
Leading up to March 20th (the first day of Spring) and beyond, do this exercise daily, or as many times as you want if you’re feeling particularly agitated or angry.
